Akron drivers brace for a challenging week ahead as the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) announces significant road closures and construction projects. Starting Monday, May 11, drivers will encounter nightly closures of key ramps on Interstate 76 and Interstate 77, impacting travel between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. These closures are essential for drainage repairs, ensuring the safety and functionality of the highways.
The affected ramps include the I-77 south at the I-76/Kenmore leg, with a detour via I-277, and the I-76/Kenmore leg north to I-76 east, requiring a more intricate route through I-77. Additionally, the I-76 west to I-77 south ramp will be closed from Thursday, May 14, at 9 p.m., through Friday, May 15, at 5 a.m., causing further disruptions.
In Fairlawn and Bath Township, I-77 widening projects will bring their own set of challenges. Starting May 18, the ramp from Ghent Road to I-77 northbound and the ramp from I-77 north to Ghent Road will be closed for pavement reconstruction until early and mid-July, respectively. These closures will necessitate alternative routes, adding to the complexity of daily commutes.
Furthermore, the I-77 southbound to Ghent Road and Ghent Road to I-77 southbound ramps will remain closed through mid-May and July, respectively. This ongoing work will continue to impact traffic flow, with nightly lane closures on I-77 between Ghent and Everett roads for pavement repairs, scheduled to conclude by September 2027.
These construction projects, while necessary for infrastructure maintenance, will undoubtedly cause frustration among Akron drivers. The frequent closures and detours highlight the ongoing efforts to improve road conditions and safety. However, it is essential to plan routes and allow extra time during these periods to minimize the impact on daily commutes and travel plans.
