In a significant shift for the Star Wars franchise, Dave Filoni has been appointed as the new president of Lucasfilm. This change comes on the heels of Kathleen Kennedy's rumored departure from her role, which has now been confirmed. Known for his exceptional contributions to The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars, Filoni is stepping into this prominent leadership position at a crucial juncture for the beloved space opera.
Kathleen Kennedy, who has led Lucasfilm since Disney's acquisition of the company in 2012, will be stepping back to focus exclusively on producing films. She was personally chosen for the presidency by George Lucas, the visionary behind Star Wars. Under her leadership, the franchise experienced unprecedented growth and storytelling expansion, introducing iconic characters like Rey and Grogu.
Filoni’s new role as president will not detract from his ongoing responsibilities as chief creative officer at Lucasfilm. He will work alongside Lynwen Brennan, who has been with Lucasfilm since 1999 and holds the title of co-president. This collaborative structure aims to blend Filoni’s creative vision with operational expertise.
Expressing his gratitude, Filoni shared, "My love of storytelling was shaped by the films of Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas. I never imagined I would have the chance to learn from both of them. Kathy has overseen a remarkable expansion in Star Wars storytelling on screen like we’ve never seen before."
Since joining Lucasfilm in 2005, Filoni has been instrumental in developing several exciting projects. He is currently the showrunner for the second season of Ahsoka and also serves as a writer and producer for the upcoming film, The Mandalorian & Grogu. His leadership comes at a pivotal moment as the Star Wars franchise prepares to return to theaters after a series of delays. The highly anticipated release of The Mandalorian & Grogu is set for May 22nd, with another film titled Starfighter directed by Shawn Levy slated for 2027.
