DNEG London's Photography Adventure: Unveiling the Art of Light and Composition (2026)

Ever feel like your creative spark needs a jumpstart? At DNEG, we believe unlocking your artistic potential is crucial, and sometimes, the answer lies in the lens of a camera. We're talking about photography, an art form that does more than just capture images; it hones your eye, sharpens your observational skills, and provides a fundamental grasp of light, color, and composition. Plus, let's be honest, it's just a really fun way to connect with colleagues and create something beautiful together!

Recently in London, we've been running weekly photography workshops, and the results have been truly inspiring. Dara McGarry, our Outreach Senior Manager for DNEG Animation, and Andrew Schlussel, Senior Director of Training & Development, also for DNEG Animation, have been leading the charge. These workshops are open to everyone on the London crew and take place during lunch breaks. The group ventures out to nearby locations, transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary canvases for learning and practicing photographic techniques.

So, what's been coming out of these workshops? Prepare to be amazed! Below, you'll find a selection of photographs taken by our talented team members during these sessions. It's a testament to the power of practice and the hidden artistic talents within DNEG.

Here's a glimpse into the world through their lenses:

  • Karunakar Reddy
  • Abigail Cadogan
  • Elena Borla
  • Nikolay Zorov
  • Andrew Schlussel
  • Ben Spence
  • Dara McGarry
  • Saif Hadi
  • Greg King
  • Saikrishnan Ganesan

But here's where it gets controversial... Some argue that digital photography has become too easy, almost disposable, with filters and editing tools masking true skill. Do you think these workshops help cultivate a deeper appreciation for the art, or are they simply a fun pastime? And this is the part most people miss: could the skills honed in photography actually enhance our work in visual effects and animation, by giving us a better understanding of real-world lighting and composition? We'd love to hear your thoughts on the impact of photography on artistic development and its relevance to the VFX industry. Share your opinions in the comments below!
