The accused, 23-year-old Hamza Khan, is facing grave charges related to the death of 53-year-old Craig Dean, who tragically succumbed to his injuries two days after the altercation that took place on July 7 last year, outside Dean's residence on Springfield Road in Kings Heath.
During the proceedings at Birmingham Crown Court, Khan acknowledged that he had indeed struck Dean twice but attempted to deflect responsibility by claiming that his co-defendant, 25-year-old Mohammed Rahman, was the one who delivered a fatal kick to Dean's head. This incident has been described as part of a fierce dispute among drug dealers, which escalated to lethal violence.
As the trial unfolded, it was revealed that Khan, after leaving the scene of the crime, did not immediately turn himself in; instead, he continued his drug-dealing activities. He expressed feelings of panic upon learning of Dean's death, suggesting he believed the confrontation was merely a fight that had spiraled out of control. To avoid capture, he fled to a holiday cottage in Worcestershire, where he claimed to be trying to muster the courage to surrender.
Interestingly, when police apprehended him on July 16, he reported feeling a sense of relief. However, during a subsequent police interview, Khan admitted to providing false statements, denying any physical involvement in Dean's injuries, only to later reveal the truth about his actions in court. He shared that he was mentally unstable due to a panic attack experienced in his cell the night prior.
Khan's legal representative, Tyrone Smith KC, brought attention to the troubling searches found on his mobile device, which included terms such as 'Kings Heath News', 'Murder probe meaning', and notably, 'Dua (prayer) to make evidence disappear'. When asked about this search, Khan explained that he felt compelled to look it up due to knowing that his phone had previously interacted with Dean. He also searched for information regarding manslaughter and gross negligence sentences in the UK, indicating an awareness of the potential consequences he might face.
Reflecting on the events of that fateful day, Khan recounted how he was acting as the driver for Rahman, who was engaged in managing drug transactions through their "Ace line" operation. He was aware of a heated exchange between Rahman and Dean, who had reportedly been denied service. Khan alleged that Dean had acted in a racially charged manner during their confrontation.
Describing the moment of conflict, Khan insisted there was no intention for violence—he merely thought the argument would remain verbal. However, as tensions escalated, he witnessed Rahman throw the first punch, prompting him to intervene by throwing two punches himself, leading to Dean being knocked to the ground. Afterward, in a state of severe panic, Khan recalled fleeing back to his vehicle, fully aware of the gravity of their actions.
