Rafael Nadal's Return to the Australian Open: A Legend's Homecoming! (2026)

Australian Open tournament director sends message to Rafael Nadal as he returns to Melbourne

For the first time since he retired from tennis, Rafael Nadal returned to Melbourne. The Spaniard called it quits at the 2024 Davis Cup Finals, having won 22 Grand Slam titles during his career.

But he hadn’t been back to the Australian Open until recently. Nadal’s not the only tennis legend to make their long-awaited return to Australia in 2026, as his former rival, Roger Federer, starred at the Australian Open Opening Ceremony.

Touching down in Melbourne on the eve of the 2026 Australian Open men’s singles final, Nadal was all smiles. Who will win the Australian Open men’s singles final?

Reacting to his visit, tournament director Craig Tiley sent Nadal a message on social media. Craig Tiley says it’s ‘great to see’ Rafael Nadal back at the Australian Open.

On X, Tiley shared the following message about Nadal’s return to Australia. ‘Great to see Rafael Nadal back at the Australian Open for the first time since his retirement to mark Kia’s 25th anniversary as a long-standing AO major partner,’ he said. More Tennis News

‘[Roger] Federer, [Novak] Djokovic, and now Nadal… It’s been a phenomenal AO,’ Tiley added.

The ‘big three’, as they were best known during their heyday, have all made appearances down under this month. Federer took part in an all-star exhibition match with Andre Agassi, Ash Barty, Pat Rafter, and Lleyton Hewitt during the Opening Ceremony.

Then, in the semifinals, Djokovic defeated Jannik Sinner to qualify for a record-extending 11th Australian Open final. Where does that performance rank out of Novak Djokovic’s best of all time?

And now, Nadal has also shown his face at the ‘Happy Slam’. All three players will go down in history as some of the greatest to have ever graced the court in Melbourne, but how did they perform at the year’s first Grand Slam event?

Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic’s Australian Open records

Unsurprisingly, of the three, it’s Djokovic who has won the most Australian Open titles.

  • 1. Novak Djokovic – 10 (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023)
  • 2. Roger Federer – 6 (2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2017, 2018)
  • 3. Rafael Nadal – 2 (2009, 2022)

Second is Federer, with six titles, and Nadal sits third with two. The Spaniard won his two Australian Open titles 13 years apart, defeating Federer in the 2009 final and Daniil Medvedev in 2022.

The ranking is the same when analyzing their number of match wins at the Australian Open.

  • 1. Novak Djokovic – 104
  • 2. Roger Federer – 102
  • 3. Rafael Nadal – 77

77 match wins and two titles are incredible achievements, but they pale in comparison to what Djokovic and Federer achieved. That begs the question… Why did Nadal struggle (comparatively) at the Australian Open?

Well, it’s hard to look past his injuries. Nadal would often arrive at the event carrying knocks from the previous season, reducing his effectiveness down under. Or, he’d pick up an injury during the tournament. In 2014, he suffered a back injury, which cost him the final against Stan Wawrinka, a match in normal circumstances, he would have been the favorite to win.

Others believe Nadal needed time to find his rhythm. With the Australian Open usually being his first or second event of the season, Nadal never had enough time to find his best tennis down under. Whereas by the clay-court season, Nadal was in his stride, ready to win titles at will.

The Spaniard may have been disappointed not to win more in Australia, but he remains a tournament favorite. Fans in Australia will undoubtedly hope to see Nadal back at the Australian Open next year, perhaps even in an exhibition event with Federer...
