Takehiro Tomiyasu Signs for Ajax | Arsenal Exit & Future in Eredivisie (2026)

A New Chapter for Tomiyasu: The Defender's Fresh Start at Ajax

In a surprising move, former Arsenal stalwart Takehiro Tomiyasu has signed a six-month contract with Dutch giants Ajax, joining forces with fellow Japanese international Ko Itakura in Amsterdam. This transfer marks a fresh beginning for Tomiyasu, who has been battling injuries and limited playing time at Arsenal.

Tomiyasu's departure from Arsenal was a mutual decision, with the defender having featured in just six minutes of Premier League action last season. He underwent surgery on his troublesome right knee in February, keeping him sidelined for an extended period.

"I'm thrilled and delighted to be here at Ajax," Tomiyasu expressed on the club's website. "It's been a challenging year, but I never lost hope. I worked tirelessly, and now I feel like I'm restarting my career."

With 42 caps for Japan, Tomiyasu last represented the Samurai Blue in June 2024. He aims to regain his fitness and secure a spot in Hajime Moriyasu's World Cup squad next summer, while also benefiting from the familiarity of playing alongside Itakura.

"Having a close teammate at the same club is fantastic," Tomiyasu said about Itakura. "We've been teammates since we were 16, so we know each other's game inside out."

A versatile defender, Tomiyasu made his professional debut with his hometown club Avispa Fukuoka. He also played for Sint-Truiden and Bologna before joining Arsenal in 2021, where he featured in 84 matches across all competitions.

Ajax currently sits third in the Eredivisie, trailing leaders PSV Eindhoven by 14 points. Meanwhile, the four-time European champions are struggling in the Champions League, languishing near the bottom of the league phase table.

"Ajax showed faith in my abilities and quality, which is why I chose to join them," Tomiyasu explained. "We have a young squad, and although we're facing challenges, I believe we can still win the league."

"I've played for one of the world's biggest and best clubs, and I want to be a role model for our young players, both on and off the pitch."

But here's where it gets interesting: Tomiyasu's move to Ajax could spark a debate about player loyalty and the impact of injuries on careers. Do you think Tomiyasu made the right choice? And what impact will his experience have on Ajax's young squad? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
