The industry's reliance on government subsidies and the continued support of taxpayers further highlights the need for a ban. Europe, once a leading producer of farmed fur, has seen a decline in the industry, with a record-low 6 million pelts produced in 2024, generating only €180 million in sales. The European Union's hesitation to enact a total ban due to economic concerns is a mistake, as the industry's contribution to the economy is minimal compared to the potential risks. Neil Vora, the executive director of the Preventing Pandemics at the Source Coalition, emphasizes the need for a cultural shift in recognizing the unacceptable nature of cruelty to animals, especially when it poses a threat to public health.
